The Rockaway Hunting Club
Lawrence, New York
Format: Better-ball of partners. Prizes will be awarded to the winners and runners-up in a gross and net division.
Course description (from The Private Course Guide - Daniel Wexler): Though the organization itself dates all the way back to 1878, the Rockaway Hunting Club debuted golf on its Brosewere Bay site in 1891, with the present layout being built by Devereux Emmet in 1915, then updated, in the form of seven new holes, by A.W. Tillinghast in 1926. Long viewed as a marvelously sited layout with but a handful of genuinely strong holes, the club took a giant leap forward in the form of a 2012 Gil Hanse renovation that removed numerous trees and completely rebuilt and expanded the bunkering, lifting the course’s overall quality considerably. Play opens on the bay side of the clubhouse, moves inland through a residential neighborhood, then eventually flanks and crosses the expanse of Woodmere Channel for collection of windswept holes occupying a peninsula which juts southward into the bay. The openers provide a hint of things to come, with the 344-yard 1st descending to the marshes, while the 376-yard 2nd bends gently right, around a perfectly invasive fairway bunker. However, the real action begins at the 525-yard 6th, a dogleg right along Woodmere Channel whose green Hanse extended leftward, to the waterside. The 381-yard 7th then requires an angled drive across the Channel (biting off as much as one dares) before play peaks at the 341-yard 8th (a dangerous drive-and-pitch to a very narrow green at water’s edge) and the 462-yard par-4 9th, an imposing dogleg right along the waterline. Things settle a bit thereafter, save for the 212-yard 14th (which cuts back across the Channel – and actually crosses the 7th) and the 424-yard 17th, a dogleg right whose green flanks the marshes south of the clubhouse.
Charity: The Outpost Foundation's primary purpose is to promote awareness and raise financial support for worthwhile charitable and educational causes in the United States through golf events and related activities. Funds raised will be contributed to an annual scholarship program to benefit our educational mission for need-based students. These annual scholarships will provide college tuition assistance to deserving students involved in the game of golf.
We thank you in advance for your generosity. The Outpost Foundation is very pleased to announce the first class of Outpost Scholarship recipients. These five young men and women are all remarkable in their own right and we are honored that they will be representing us as they continue their educations this fall. None of this would be possible without your support.
