We’re excited to share this quarter’s Outpost Foundation Scholar Spotlight—featuring Ernesto Martinez (@Turfnerd26). If you’re not already following Ernesto on Instagram, you should be—his account is as entertaining as it is insightful, offering a behind-the-scenes look at turf management, course life, and the passion that drives his work.

Ernesto’s journey is one that reminds us exactly why the Outpost Foundation exists—and why your support matters.

At 45, after moving from Venezuela to pursue his education, Ernesto faced challenges that would have made many people reconsider their path. He couldn’t work while studying, housing was expensive, and he was navigating college in his second language. But he had a vision: to elevate the quality of golf courses in his home country and create opportunities for future generations.

Today, with help from the Outpost Foundation Scholarship, that vision is becoming reality.

A Passion Rooted in Purpose

Ernesto recently graduated from Penn State’s Golf Course Turfgrass Management Program with highest distinction—an achievement he describes as one of his proudest moments.

But for Ernesto, this was never just about earning a degree.

He calls himself “a turf nerd”—constantly observing, learning, and thinking about how landscapes can be improved. If you follow him on Instagram, you see that passion come to life. His content is equal parts educational and entertaining, offering a behind-the-scenes look at turf management, course life, and the curiosity that drives his work.

As Ernesto puts it:

“Playing golf in Venezuela showed me what was possible—and what needed to be better.”

Since becoming an Outpost Foundation scholar, Ernesto’s world has expanded in ways that once felt out of reach.

He’s built a strong network, gained recognition in the industry, and is now preparing for an exciting next step—relocating to Bermuda to work as an Assistant Superintendent on a course restoration project with renowned architect Gil Hanse.

It’s a role he once only dreamed about—even mentioning it during his scholarship interview.

“Going to the Mid Ocean Club in Bermuda… that was a moment I thought, ‘Wow—I’m actually doing this.’”

The Ripple Effect of Your Support

Ernesto is clear about one thing: none of this happens in isolation.

From helping cover housing costs to enabling travel back to Venezuela to assess course conditions, the Outpost Foundation scholarship has played a direct role in his journey.

But beyond financial support, what’s mattered most is belief.

“It means the world… having people from another country believe in me without even meeting me says a lot.”

That belief has given him confidence—not just in his abilities, but in his future.

Looking Ahead: Giving Back to Grow the Game

Ernesto’s long-term goal isn’t just career success—it’s impact.

He plans to return to South America and help restore and improve golf courses, working alongside organizations like the Venezuelan Golf Federation to elevate conditions and create opportunities for future generations.

“I want to help restore the golf courses and improve them for future generations.”

A Message to You

To those who have supported the Outpost Foundation, Ernesto shares:

“You can change lives—and golf itself. It’s meaningful and totally worth it. Don’t hesitate on helping.”

And to future scholars:

“Apply. Tell your true story. Everyone has an inspiring moment.”

Because of supporters like you, stories like Ernesto’s are possible.

Thank you for being part of this impact.
