 Shaping the Legacy of Golf

Help us to make a meaningful impact on the future of golf by discussing the game of the past, present and future.

“Shaping the Legacy of Golf” will be an annual gathering to celebrate, support, and make a meaningful impact on the future of golf. Each year we will focus on different areas of the game and feature a round table discussion of industry leaders.

In 2021, the focus will be diversity and inclusion in and around golf. Panelists from different walks of life will assemble to discuss how and why we need to make the game welcoming for all.

Tuesday, October 19, 2021 we will kick off with the contesting of the Outpost Foundation Cup at Sleepy Hollow Country Club. This cup was generously donated to the Foundation by former board member Steve Sears, who sadly passed of cancer in 2020. Golf will be followed by dinner, a presentation and a live auction.

For 2021 we are excited to announce that $25,000 of the proceeds from this inaugural event will underwrite the first two Steven Sears Scholars via the AJGA internship program, focusing on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.  This program closely aligns with the mission of the Outpost Foundation, and we are excited to support these interns on their journey.  See more about the internship program here.

Sleepy Hollow Country Club

C.B. Macdonald (1915)/A.W. Tillinghast (1928)

Golf Digest #62 in US, Outpost Club #26 in US and #45 World

From The American Private Golf Club Guide by Daniel Wexler: C.B. Macdonald’s Sleepy Hollow Country Club occupies scenic ground high above the Hudson River and boasts a curiously hybridized architectural history; during a 1933 renovation, A.W. Tillinghast added seven new holes, later the club hired Gil Hanse and George Bahto to perform a major 2007 makeover, resulting in the more strategic, aesthetically unified test in play today.  Embracing the property’s frequently challenging terrain, Macdonald built replica holes including the 160-yard 3rd (an Eden played across a deep chasm), while other surviving standards include the downhill, 210-yard reverse Redan 7th, the newly lengthened 495yards Alps 15th, and the 155-yard 16th, a Short whose vast panoramic view across the Hudson has long made it one of the region’s most photographed holes.  Non-replica standouts include the 435-yard 5th (offering a small backdrop), the 430-yard 11th, (played to a narrow push-up green), the new 535-yard 1th and the 420-yard 18th, an uphill finisher with putting surface tucked behind a pair of deep front-right bunkers.

NB: Since this review was written, Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner have returned and completed a large-scale renovation that has been very well received by architecture experts.
